Si il existe dans la truculente jungle de notre lectorat quelques individus assidus malgré la sporadicité de nos publications, alors les toulousains des Sound Sweet Sound doivent au minimum leur rappeler quelque chose dans leurs souvenirs confus puisqu'on avait eu le plaisir de les interviewer à l'occasion de la sortie de leur excellent premier album. Les curieux et autres dilettantes qui ne seraient pas à la page sauront rattraper leur regrettable retard ici. Les autres auront probablement déjà passé leur route et bien mal leur en aura pris car le groupe nous revient avec un nouvel EP, Up To You, qu'on a décortiqué pour vous avec un plaisir non dissimulé...

If it exists in the colourful jungle of our readership some diligent individuals despite the irregularity of our publications, then the name of the Sound Sweet Sound should at least ring a bell for them since we had the pleasure of interviewing them for the release of their excellent debut album. Curious people and other dilettantes will obviously catch up with their unfortunate delay here  The others have probably already hit the road and, sadly for them, missed the amazing band's new EP, "Up To You", that we've dissected for you with undisguised pleasure ...

Il est de coutume ici d'évoquer chaque expérience musicale en disséquant l'imagerie ou les sensations qu'elle nous évoque plutôt qu'en s'attardant en vaines descriptions techniques ou subjectives délibérations affectives. "Up To You", le morceau qui donne son nom au nouvel EP des Sound Sweet Sound, est d'ailleurs une source incroyable d'inspiration pour se livrer à ce genre d'exercice tant l'atmosphère qui s'en dégage, intensément envoûtante, nous plonge dans d'étranges rêveries aux aspects cinématographiques. Et pourtant on ne s'aventurera pas sur ce terrain cette fois-ci car le groupe, non content d'avoir écrit cet excellent morceau, a en plus réalisé un clip somptueux bien plus éloquent que tout ce que l'on pourrait écrire et sur lequel il serait fort dommage de ne pas s'attarder quelques minutes: Sur un léger larsen le décor est planté. Un homme fume une dernière clope avant de rentrer dans club lugubre à mi-chemin entre un peep-show et un bordel. Un premier clin d'oeil aux Doors, influence commune à chaque membre du groupe comme ils nous le confiaient lors de l'interview cité plus haut, est glissé subtilement sur un des premiers plans montrant la large porte d'entrée avec à son sommet l'enseigne lumineuse "The End" qui évoque un des titres les plus sublimes du groupe de Jim Morrisson. Dans une succession de scènes surréalistes où évoluent cet homme, une femme polymorphe et d'autres personnages forts étranges, on suit interloqué une intrigue qui repose sur un habile équilibre entre l'obscène et l'érotisme et souligne brillamment la captivante singularité de la musique. On savoure les références au cinéma de David Lynch que le groupe a dissimulé dans pratiquement chaque scène: l’ambiguïté des relations humaines de Blue Velvet, les décors de Twin Peaks, le thème du double abordé dans Mulholland Drive où encore le sinistre cameraman qu'on retrouve dans Lost Highway.

Si le décor reste le même pour "Three Four", à savoir celui d'un truculent bordel bondé d'individu aussi inquiétant que fascinant, l'atmosphère se fait en revanche moins languissante. Le rythme s'accélère dans une ritournelle entêtante ponctuée par un chant qui flirte impudemment avec le racolage et une nappe de clavier hypnotique, et nous, pauvres hères libidineux, dociles esclaves de nos désir tyranniques, succombons inéluctablement à notre inextinguible concupiscence enflammé par la musique du septuor toulousain.

"Holy Songs",  qui malheureusement ne vient compléter cet EP que dans sa version CD et digital, présente une autre facette du groupe beaucoup plus introspective lorgnant pour notre plus grand plaisir du côté du shoegaze et des Brian Jonestown Massacre dans la veine de "Anemone".  On se laisse alors cueillir dans un irrésistible crescendo par un chant voluptueux à l'extrême opposé du ton provocateur qui habite les deux premiers morceaux.

It is customary here to discuss each musical experience by dissecting the imagery or the sensations that it evokes rather than lingering in useless technical descriptions or subjective emotional deliberations. "Up To You", the song that gives its name to the new Sound Sweet Sound's EP, is also an incredible source of inspiration to engage in this kind of exercise as the intensely mesmerizing atmosphere that emanates from it plunges us into strange dreams. And yet we will not venture into that area this time because of the band, not satisfied with having written this excellent piece, has realised ​​a sumptuous clip which is much more eloquent than anything we could ever write  and which would be a pity not to take few minutes to look into. The stage is set on a light feedback. A man's smoking a last cigarette before he gets into a shady club halfway between a peep show and a brothel. The band pay a small tribute to the Doors, a common influence of each members as they confided to us in the interview quoted above, subtly inserted on one of the first shots showing a wide door with the luminous sign "the End"  over the entrance that obviously evokes one of the most gorgeous song of Jim Morrison's band. In a succesion of surreal scenes where evolve this man, a polymorphic woman and a couple of other strange characters, we follow dumbstruck a plot that plays with a clever balance between obscenity and eroticism while brilliantly highlighting the beauty of this captivating music. The references to David Lynch's movies are all over the place: the ambiguity of human relationships of "Blue Velvet", the decor of "Twin Peaks", the duality of the characters of "Mulholland Drive" and the strange cameraman of "Lost Highway".

If the setting is the same for "Three Four", that is a crowded and truculent brothel as disturbing as it is fascinating, however the atmosphere is less languid. The pace accelerates in a haunting chorus punctuated by a voice that flirts shamelessly with the solicitation and a web of hypnotic keyboard, and us, libidinous wretches, docile slaves of our tyrannical desire inevitably succumb to our unquenchable lust ignited by the music.

"Holy Songs", which unfortunately complements this EP only in its CD and digital version presents a more introspective facet of the band which tends for our delight to the shoegaze side in the vein of "Anemone" of the Brian Jonestown Massacre. We are carried away in an irresistible crescendo by a voluptuous voice of the extreme opposite to the provocative tone that inhabits the first two pieces.



Avec ce nouvel EP, Sound Sweet Sound propose aux auditeurs, pauvres pécheurs dont la luxure résonne en eux comme la promesse d'une éternité de souffrance au royaume de Méphistophélès, une musique cathartique; un exutoire inespéré pour leurs libidos outrancières et autres désirs licencieux. Le travail est parachevé par un superbe clip univoque et bourré de références du meilleur goût. Le salut de vos âmes est à portée d'oreilles.
